There scam programs that use the mlm compensation model but these programs are not true mlm companies- they just happen to use the mlm recruiting style and pay on multiple levels.
How to Spot an MLM Scam
First of all, the biggest telltale sign of an mlm scam is that there isn’t a viable product. When I say viable I mean a product that real people would buy at that price-point even if there’s no business opportunity present.
You may want re-read that again so that it really sinks in. Many companies have got themselves in hot water and even closed down because they have products that no real human being would buy at the price there selling it for- unless they were distributors for the company.

1. The product â There must be a viable product/service Period. There are lot of yahoos who say product doesn’t matter and these same people are the first ones to scam you out of your hard earned money. If anyone tells you the product doesnât matter, run far away from them and hide your wallet and your children.
2. The company â Does the company has momentum? Is the company on an upswing, holding stead or declining? It’s easier to get people interested in a company that has a lot of momentum and energy going for it. You typically find this kind of environment when a company is fairly new or when a new product/compensation is launched.
This doesn’t mean that you should join start up companies, because you really should wait til the company’s at least two years old since most companies go out of business within the first couple of years.
3. The Leadership – You also want to look at who’s heading the company. Do they have a history of making good company decisions? A history of past business failures?
4. The compensation plan â It goes without saying that if you want to know what is mlm, you also want to know how to make money in this industry.
The typical mlm compensation plan requires you to sponsor a large sales force in order to make any decent money. This also means that you’re going to be required to be on some sort of monthly autoship of products.
Depending on the type of compensation plan, you may be required to meet certain volume quotas in order to earn your full commission check. This is what a lot of people refer to as garage qualified because distributors order product just to get their full commissions.
So before you join that mlm, make sure you know what is required of you in order to get your full commission check. Make sure you’re willing to commit to the monthly autoship.

Clickbank University (CBU) will train you to be a successful Clickbank affiliate. The pros of going through the training is that you are taught by top Clickbank affiliates who have done millions in sales such as Robby Blanchard and Justin Atlan.
Robby has his own Clickbank training course called Commission Hero, which focuses on using Facebook ads to drive traffic. You will need to be able to spend at least $20 daily on ads in order to make it work. Although a good course, this kind of ad spend is out of reach for a lot of newbie marketers, so it's not a course focused on here.
In fact, here is a video with Robby talking about his success as Clickbank's #1 affiliate....
The Cost
As of this writing the cost of the training is $47/mo. Now when Clickbank University came out the first time, if memory serves me correct, the price back then was somewhere in the neighborhood of $99/mo. So, the cost has been reduced to less than half of what it used to be - which makes it a more affordable option for a lot more people.

If you know anything about me, you know that Iâm not a huge fan of the tactics that some affiliates of Wealthy Affiliate engage in - up to and including lying, purposely giving out misinformation on competing products/services in order to make Wealthy Affiliate the âwinnerâ in every kind of comparison. Imagine that!
However, Wealthy Affiliate does provide some decent training.
Wealthy Affiliate Cost
âThe cost of this program is $49/mo - so itâs comparable to Clickbank University in terms of price range. However, there is a free membership that gives you just 10 marketing lessons. The training is broken down to individual lessons/courses i.e. Picking a Niche etc..
What Do You Get
Wealthy Affiliate has weekly live interactive classes in addition, they have classes from e-commerce to drop shipping, to lead generation and all else in between. The vast majority of classes obviously are at the upgraded membership level - not the free one.
So there is a lot of training going on at the $49 level and it covers more than just affiliate marketing. However, this could be both a blessing and curse. When you have too many options, it makes choosing ONE that much more difficult.
So...
Who Wins Clickbank University or Wealthy Affiliate?
Let me just put this out thereâŠ
Most hopeful people who try their hand at affiliate marketing donât succeed - they make no money at all. The same can be said about e-commerce, drop-shipping, etc..
There are many reasons for this - one of which is that youâre pretty much alone as you try to build your business. In other words, you have no one to root you on or bounce ideas off of.
This is why now you see a lot of affiliate programs including forums and Facebook groups in their programs. With that said, in my opinion, this is something to consider when looking at a training program.
Communities Make the Difference
Both Wealthy Affiliate and Clickbank University have communities. Clickbank is currently revamping their forum, however, they do have weekly live Q & A sessions.
Wealthy Affiliate has its entire training site community-focused. The downside is that people can get more wrapped up in the conversations going on more than on the training. If youâre a person that is easily distracted, then you may want to look at other options other than Wealthy Affiliate.
Clickbank University has its teachings focused on one thing - making you a better
Clickbank affiliate. Because itâs more focused training, your odds of success may be better with this kind of training.
Remember, that once you go through the training at WA, you still have to find an affiliate program and/or find products to promote. With CBU, all the products are contained on Clickbank itself - you donât have to venture far to find things to promote.
If you had to choose between the two, you may want to choose CBU and master the Clickbank platform before venturing out into broader affiliate marketing.
If you want to do something other than affiliate marketing, say for example e-commerce, you may want to look at WA or better yet a program that specifically teaches only ecommerce.
What if you donât have any money for either program?
The Third Option For Affiliate Marketing Training
Let me be a little blunt hereâŠ
Yes, you can start affiliate marketing without any money, however, In order to be in business successfully, you will eventually need money to build your business in order to pay for tools and advertising.
Free Affiliate Marketing Training
As a no cost alternative, I recommend Mark Lingâs Affilorama program. It teaches you the basics of affiliate marketing and they also offer more in-depth paid courses to help take your business to the next level. Mark has his own tools like a backlinks checker and other keyword research tools that you can use for free. See one of Mark's videos below.
Affilorama is a good program even if you have money to spend, but there is no community collaboration and some of the content produced was done years ago. The basics of affiliate marketing doesn't change - what does change are strategies and tactics especially when it comes down to getting traffic.
How to Decide Between Affilorama, Clickbank University, and Wealthy Affiliate
If you like a more interactive learning environment, and you enjoy watching videos, I would suggest Clickbank University or Wealthy Affiliate. Affilorama is mostly text based and itâs not as interactive as WA and CBU.
Mark does have two other primary products, Pathway to Passive which is all about building niche websites. This may be a little more advanced for the average newbie affiliate marketer. His second primary product is Affiliojetpack, which is almost like a business in a box, complete with your niche specific website and done-for-you emails.
If you like the way Mark teaches, I would suggest starting with Affilorama to get an overview first and then get Affilojetpack. Affilorama although very informative is just a bit to "dry" for my liking - although it may be a better fit for âbeginner marketers who just want to fully understand affiliate marketing.
Just a note - Affilojetpack is basically a business in a box where everything is done for you. Although itâs a nice way to start, in general you really need to learn how to do everything yourself - write your own emails, write your own copy, put up your own website. You want to be always growing and improving.
The MOST Awesome Affiliate Marketing Training
You canât go wrong with any of the three suggestions here - you just need to carefully look at each one and see which is the best fit for you - and pick ONE. Try it out for a month and if it doesn't suit you, try another one.
I will say that the MOST focused training here is Clickbank University. The more focused you are, the more likely you are to be very successful as an affiliate marketer.

I tend to recommend products from well-known marketers not products from wanna be gurus who just want to throw together a crappy product real fast in order to make a quick buck.
A lot of these products tend to not be done very well, are not very thorough i.e you need to buy their additional upsells to fill in the gaps the main product doesnât teach, and the person or people behind the product doesnât stand by their product i.e. no support, the product is no longer accessible, etc. If youâve bought products in the past, then you know this to be the case in a lot of instances.
This is why I focused on these three particular products - Clickbank University, Affilorama, and Wealthy Affiliate. People have had success because of what they learned at each one of those programs.
Watch out for all those articles you see online that recommend products no one has ever heard of. If youâre gonna dig into your wallet and spend your money on training, at least spend money on programs that have been proven to help people get started successfully as affiliate marketers.
Weâre all different and we all learn differently and in different ways - like the saying goes, there isnât a one glove fits all approach to choosing a program.
The most important thing is that you absolutely must take ACTION on the knowledge you are given. Knowledge doesnât put money into your bank account- only applied knowledge does.

Great Automated Money-Making Systems Are Few and Far in Between
As a former active user and promoter of the Plug in Profit Site system (PIPS), I did generate leads and make money from people joining the various programs in the system.
But not as much as I wouldâve hoped for. You see, Stone Evans, the creator of this automated money-making system, changes the programs being promoted within the system quite often and without warning.
As a user of Plug in Profit Site, you would join the programs that are within the system. Some of these programs do require you to upgrade into a paying member, whereas there are usually at least one program (usually SFI) that is completely free to join.
What this means is that when someone joins PIPS from your affiliate link, they will have the opportunity to join under you in all these programs, however, for the paid programs, you have to be a paying member in order to be an affiliate.
Sounds good so far? Well, hold on...
Imagine thisâŠ
Youâve upgraded into a program in PIPS only to learn that program has been replaced with something else a month later. Now you have to upgrade into that program or lose out on potential commissions.
So you end up spending a lot of money joining program after program not knowing if the program you just joined will even be on the PIPS site tomorrow.
I donât know about you, but I donât want to keep reaching into my wallet to pull out my hard earned cash to join yet another business opportunity - especially one that I have no interest in and did not pick.
In fact, one of the biggest complaints about PIPS is that the programs keep changing. You also have no say so in what Stone Evans decides to promote on PIPS.
Remember, when you join PIPS youâre either sending your traffic directly to their landing page that promotes the five income streams or youâre sending them to your landing page that is connected to your autoresponder service in which the emails refer back to either the landing page or the PIPS back office.
You're a Loser Baby!
So your leads, potential customers and customers are constantly seeing the five income streams, however, some of them may not be the same five income streams you signed up with.
So, what happens if someone signs up to an opportunity that youâre not signed up in? It rolls up the next person above you who has upgraded/enrolled in that particular program. In a lot of cases, that someone is Stone Evans.
What am I really saying?
PIPS can work for you if you:
1. Donât mind keeping up with the various business programs Stone puts into the system. You have to keep checking the landing page and/or your back office to see what is currently being promoted - and then joining those new programs.
2. Donât mind spending lots of money on various business opportunities that Stone puts into the system.
3. Donât mind having business programs and opportunities being chosen for you.
4. Want a blog set up for you - even if it has business programs on it that you have no interest or financial gain in.
Plug-in Profit Site - Two Thumbs Down or Up?
We'll I'm mixed with this one...
Yes, this is not going to be the best fit for some people. For other people who agree with that list I put above, then PIPS is a good fit.
It's at least a way to get a blog set up on your behalf and not have to pay for hosting (at least at the time of this writing).
What I do like are some of this traffic strategies he lists in the training, including training on how to optimize your blog.
Stone Evans seems like a really nice guy. I think he really meant well when he created this business in a box system. However, youâve got to look at it from your perspective - whatâs in your best interest.
As the programs stands right now, itâs not something I can 100% endorse.
And yes Stone is aware of how people feel about him changing out the programs so often - Iâve even told him how I felt and he said that he would find a core set of business programs and stick to those. So far, that has NOT been the case.

I suggest you find a business model that you like that is in a niche that is profitable (this is key) and then roll up your sleeves and go to work. Learn how to market online effectively and in turn start building your list.
This sounds like a lot - and it can be. This is why I always recommend you invest into a good course.

Home Business
For a done-for-you business, there isn't one I can in good faith recommend. There are many that are here today, gone tomorrow. Then you have those businesses that are exact replicas of Plug-in Profit Site where the businesses are chosen for you and you have to join all of them in order to really benefit.
The only business that I can recommend that is more of an affiliate program is Global Domains International - aka GDI. If you've been on the 'net any length of time, you either joined it at one time or you've seen it being heavily promoted. You can make a significant income with it - if you stick with it. Mystery Shopping – You can just do shops that are a lot simpler and easier to do (i.e. gasoline, drug store shops (Wal-Greens etc), apartment shops. Better yet, just do shops that only require phone call audits (no physical store visits).
